KALAMAZOO, MI The Board of County Road Commissioners of the County of Kalamazoo is pleased to announce the retirement of Joanna I. Johnson, who has served as Managing Director since November 2007 at the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC).

Under her leadership, the RCKC has successfully maintained over 1,270 miles of county roads and bridges, significantly enhancing the infrastructure of Kalamazoo County. Joanna's dedication to public service and her extensive contributions to the transportation community have set a high standard for excellence.

Joanna has been an influential figure in various organizations, including her roles as a past president and member of the County Road Association (CRA) of Michigan since 2015 and a member of the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council (TAMC) serving as it’s Chair since 2016. Her commitment to professional development is evident through her participation in the Michigan Infrastructure Council’s Asset Management Champion program and her receipt of the Distinguished Service Award from the CRA in March 2020. Joanna championed numerous initiatives to improve transportation systems, enhance safety, and advance sustainable infrastructure projects. Throughout her tenure, Joanna maintained a steadfast commitment to the community, collaborating with local leaders, residents, and businesses to address evolving transportation needs.

“It has been an incredible privilege to serve the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC) since 2007, and an even greater honor to lead alongside a remarkable Team dedicated to public service,” reflected Joanna. “As I look back on my career, I am immensely proud of the milestones we’ve achieved together: building a strong, cohesive Team, fostering lasting community partnerships, practicing asset management, improving communication, improving the quality of our infrastructure, developing our state-of-the-art facility and most recently a historic $25 million dollar grant to enhancing road safety.”

The RCKC extends our heartfelt gratitude for Joanna’s years of public service and leadership. Her vision and guidance have left an indelible mark on our organization and the community we serve and have set a foundation for future growth and leadership in our sector.

The RCKC is pleased to welcome Travis D. Bartholomew as the new RCKC Managing Director effective November 6, 2024. Travis, who has served as the Assistant Managing Director with Joanna, has decades of experience in road commission operations and is well-prepared to take on this leadership role. His experience and familiarity with RCKC operations will ensure a smooth transition and continued progress in our mission to enhance road safety and infrastructure in Kalamazoo County, and will continue the legacy of service excellence and innovation that has defined Joanna’s leadership.

“In my new role, I am excited to lead our team as we collaborate with community leaders, businesses, and residents to deliver the best possible outcomes for all who depend on our roadways. Together, we will work to meet challenges head-on and explore innovative solutions that enhance mobility and improve quality of life for everyone,” said Travis. “I look forward to navigating the path ahead.
